Our Mission

Pediatrics Northwest, PS, is a regional, multi-specialty pediatric group dedicated to improving the health of the children and their families in our communities. We do this by providing the highest quality of compassionate and comprehensive healthcare, regardless of financial, ethnic, religious or social status. We further seek to achieve these goals through our continued participation in community activities that promote children's health.

The History of Pediatrics Northwest, PS

Pediatrics Northwest, PS, was co-founded in 1980 by Dr. George Tanbara and Dr. Lawrence Larson. Their vision was to provide a highly skilled team of pediatric providers to care for the area’s children.

Drs. Tanbara and Larson practiced out of a small office in the Tacoma Medical Center on South 11th and L streets and soon moved to the Connemara Building on South 19th and K streets.

  • In 1983, the practice had grown to six physicians, and the Federal Way office was opened.
  • In 1987, the practice consisted of eight physicians and expanded across the Narrows Bridge into Gig Harbor.
  • By 1996, the practice had grown to 14 physicians, including sub-specialists in pediatric and adult allergy/immunology, pediatric pulmonology, pediatric hematology/oncology, pediatric endocrinology and sleep medicine. A second Tacoma office was opened in James Center on Mildred Street.
  • Today, Pediatrics Northwest consists of 27 physicians, including six sub-specialists and two advanced registered nurse practitioners.

In addition to our four main offices, our physicians schedule appointments at Mary Bridge Children's Health Center – Tacoma and in Chehalis, Centralia, Silverdale, Covington, Olympia and Puyallup. Pediatrics Northwest is truly a comprehensive pediatric group practice, providing care for children in the entire South Puget Sound region.

The physicians at Pediatrics Northwest have a long history not only of caring for children in their practice, but also of working to improve the quality of pediatric care in the entire region. Physicians in this practice have served as president of the medical staff at Mary Bridge Children’s Hospital, and they have chaired and/or served on almost every city, region and state committee or group that deals with pediatric concerns.

Our physicians have privileges at Mary Bridge Children’s Hospital, Multicare and St. Joseph’s Hospital in Tacoma; and at St. Francis in Federal Way. Pediatrics Northwest is a clinical teaching site for the University of Washington. Most of our physicians have clinical appointments at the UW School of Medicine.
