Circumcision at Pediatrics Northwest

We know that bringing a baby into your home means making a world of new decisions. When you have a son, you will need to choose whether to have him circumcised.

Age
Circumcisions are normally performed within one month after birth. Circumcisions after that time need the performing doctor’s approval.

Location
Your doctor will recommend the best setting for the circumcision, depending on your son’s individual case.

Technique
Our doctors have performed hundreds of circumcisions and are very comfortable with the procedure. We use the PlastiBell® device, a small plastic ring that will remain around the tip of your son’s penis for approximately five to seven days. This method is meant to minimize bleeding and assist in healing. A PlastiBell® device handout and a circumcision care information sheet will be provided to you after the procedure.

Pain Management
Our doctors take pain control very seriously. We use numerous methods to minimize your son’s pain: possibilities include applying numbing cream, injecting numbing liquid and/or feeding the infant sugar-water. Our goal is to make the circumcision as pain-free as possible, and your doctor will use the technique best suited for your child.

Cost
Most private insurance plans cover the cost of circumcisions. State plans (e.g., Molina, Medicaid and DSHS) do not. A payment of $220 is due at the time of service if your insurance does not cover circumcisions. A $75 non-refundable down payment is required for all circumcision appointments at the time of scheduling the appointment.

Circumcisions are performed in our four main offices:

  • Baker Center (Tacoma)
  • James Center (Tacoma)
  • Federal Way
  • Gig Harbor
We encourage you to contact us at 253-383-5777 to discuss circumcisions or to make an appointment.
